If you tuned in to Super Bowl XLIX, then you were one of millions who came close to having a heart attack right before the game. Chevrolet pranked the Super Bowl viewing audience with a clever ad called “Blackout.”
This ad tricked viewers into thinking they were watching a live feed of them game, only to experience technical difficulties and then a blank screen. After a few tense seconds, the words, “What would you do if your TV went out?” appeared on the screen. The ad then let viewers know they could stream the game inside the all-new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado with its built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi if that ever happened.
In addition to the “Blackout” ad, Chevrolet also ran four other Colorado spots during pre- and postgame, including “Focus Group – Rugged,” “Focus Group – Sexier,” “Focus Group – Pets,” and “Theme Song.”
“When you have a groundbreaking product like the Chevy Colorado, you must deliver groundbreaking advertising like we are today.” said Paul Edwards, US vice president of Chevrolet Marketing, in a statement.
