  • Employee Spotlight – Derek Mason

What's Your StoryThis month the spotlight is on our very own Service Adviser, Derek Mason. Derek is a new face to the company, having only worked at College Chevy for about three weeks. He’s been in the automotive industry for a couple years and previously worked as a Tire Technician at a discount tire shop. Derek is originally from South Lyon, MI but now resides in Grass Lake where he enjoys going on nature walks or outdoor adventures with his dog Buddy.

Derek also enjoys watching That 70’s Show, but when football season is here, he spends his time cheering on the Detroit Lions and Michigan Wolverines. As for the automotive side of things, Derek currently drives a 2015 Chevy Sonic and it’s his favorite car he’s ever owned. If he could chose a car that would match his personality, Derek would say the Colorado fits him perfectly. Even though Derek has a lot of Chevy favorites, his dream car is a 2014 Chevy Camaro ZL1 that he fell in love with the first time he took it for a ride.

    Derek Mason - Employee Spotlight

We are very excited to have Derek as part of our staff and we hope you get the opportunity to work with him in our service drive. His favorite part about his job is being able to help out the customers, so don’t hesitate to come to Derek with any questions or concerns that you have.

  • The History of Labor Day

    Labor Day

Labor Day, which takes place on the first Monday of September every year, is a national holiday that celebrates workers in America. The history of Labor Day has roots in the labor movement of the 1800s, a movement that protested against the inhumane treatment of workers during the Industrial Revolution and helped win key rights for the American labor force.

At the start of the Industrial Revolution, as early as the 1700s, laborers began protesting against the horrible conditions of factories and their long work hours. The labor movement grew more organized as the years went on, attempting to organize into unions, as well as rallying and holding strikes.

A member of the labor movement proposed making Labor Day an official holiday in the early 1880s, though historians still debate whether Peter McGuire or Matthew McGuire was the first to propose it and when. Regardless, the first Labor Day celebration was held on September 5, 1882.

Workers organized to hold another Labor Day celebration on the same day in 1883, and in 1884 an official proposal was made for Labor Day to take place on the first Monday of every September. Labor Day was celebrated in 23 states before Congress passed a law in 1894 making it an official holiday nationwide.

This Labor Day, kick back and relax — you’ve earned it! While you’re at it, treat yourself by stopping into College Chevrolet Buick and checking out our selection.

  • Fourth of July Driving Tips

    4th of July

Heading out onto the road is just a regular part of celebrating Independence Day, but it’s not a task that should be taken lightly. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more drivers died in collisions on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year from 2010-14, making it exceedingly important that you exercise caution on roadways. Consider the following before hitting the road this 4th of July.

    Have your vehicle serviced

If you’re planning on going somewhere for Independence Day, make sure that you’ve maintained your recommended service and maintenance schedule. If you’re due for an appointment at College Chevrolet Buick, the weeks leading up to the Fourth of July is a great time to get necessary work done.

    Follow the three-second rule

Make sure there are at least 3 seconds of time between you and the vehicle in front of you, or approximately two car lengths. This was a rule that you learned in driver’s ed, but it may have slipped from your mind as you’ve become more comfortable behind the wheel. Refamiliarize yourself with this habit to maximize safety.

    Have a designated driver

Drunk driving is a significant problem for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians on any day of the year, and the danger only increases on days where celebration is the norm. If you plan on having any alcohol over the Fourth of July, make absolutely sure that you have a designated driver at the ready.

    Plan accordingly

The best way to avoid the congestion that comes with the July 4th is to not drive on that day. Instead, get to where you’re going a day early and leave a day later; not only will you feel less rushed, but you’ll be less likely to run into a jam.

These are just some of the ways that you can better ensure your safety on the road this Fourth of July. From all of us here at College Chevrolet Buick, stay safe and have a great holiday!

Currently, Alan drives a Chevy Suburban, but his all-time favorite car he’s ever owned was a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am. His favorite current Chevy vehicle is the Suburban, but he thinks that the Impala matches his personality best. Alan says that the worst car he’s ever driven was a Chrysler PT Cruiser.

When not at work, you’ll catch Alan playing games with his kids, going to the movies, and taking his wife on dates. He enjoys cheering on the Detroit Tigers and his favorite TV show is Royal Pains.

  • Who Was J.D. Power’s Most Awarded Brand in 2017? Chevrolet

    2018 Chevrolet Traverse

The experts at J.D. Power are dedicated to cutting through the fat and determining the tops in the automotive industry year after year. The measure of an auto brand’s abilities to deliver for its customers can be easily determined based on the number of honors it earns from J.D. Power in a given year. By this standard, no other brand was better in 2017 than Chevrolet, which took home a total of nine awards in J.D. Power’s 2017 Vehicle Dependability (VDS); Initial Quality (IQS); and Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Studies.

“Chevrolet is winning with consumers because our designers, engineers, and dealers are focused on delivering great products and a great ownership experience,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and brand chief of Global Chevrolet. “This recognition from J.D. Power shows Chevrolet’s strength and underscores the momentum we have across the board.”

Last year, six different Chevrolet vehicles earned J.D. Power awards, which measure “the automotive brands that are continually exceeding customer expectations and leading the way in terms of dependability, quality and overall customer satisfaction.” The Chevrolet Sonic and Silverado HD topped their respective segments in the VDS and IQS, and the Chevrolet Tahoe was tops in the VDS and APEAL Study.

The Chevrolet Camaro also earned top honors in the VDS, the Silverado 1500 topped the full-size pickup segment in the IQS, and the all-new Chevrolet Bolt EV earned the award for its segment in the APEAL Study. Chevrolet also scored big-time in the 2018 J.D. Power Customer Service Index (CSI) Study and 2017 Sales Satisfaction Index Study, which measure customer satisfaction with the brand’s services and experiences.

We’re proud to represent J.D. Power’s most awarded brand, and we’re excited to show you first-hand why Chevrolet earned that very prestigious title. Stop in for a test drive at College Chevrolet Buick and feel the difference that award-winning quality makes.
